It’s high time to plug in a good word for Jacky! After all, on the eve of his 70th birthday, the greatest Belgian racing driver deserves three cheers. For he has won eight Formula 1 Grand Prix, six times the 24 Hours of Le Mans and been at the centre of innumerable exploits in rally raid races and other disciplines, such as cycling. He came through the deadliest period of automobile sports, not wholly unscathed, but with panache and talent. Being born on 1st January, 1945 predestined him to be a hero in times of peace; it was meant to be.
