Fast is safe
Maurice Trintignant, the uncle of Jean Louis, the actor, was one of France’s greatest racing drivers. In 1967, he published a book intended for all car drivers entitled “How to Drive Your Car”. In it, he shot down a couple of misconceptions, such as the one about speed being the cause of accidents. Trintignant demonstrated the contrary : speed limits are dangerous because driving slowly robs one of focus. Speed limits are specific to each vehicle, each driver, and are a function of adherence and visibility. Those countless speed limit signs are a dangerous absurdity. Are there any intelligences left, non-formatted by the prevailing doxa, infantilizing and disempowering, to recognize one’s common sense?
